Found a thought-provoking video:
In any case, it addresses a few of the concerns I have with media (it's far from exhaustive, but it's something worth watching). And for those of you who are interested about my acting/modelling/extras/anything experiment... I still haven't gotten a call - from anybody. And you know what? I'm not even surprised. I somehow already guessed that I wouldn't get any roles in media. It probably doesn't help when I actually stated I won't take on any stereotypical roles. God, please give me a gig!
Jeff Yang makes an exceptional point in that Asians are using the internet to not only find more realistic representations of themselves, but also to finally represent themselves in ways that we ourselves can truly relate to.
I guess this was one of the reasons why I started this blog. On the one hand I have a deep interest in all things Asian, on the other hand, I want to be able to depict us in a way that we understand, the way we see ourselves - in a positive realistic light.
Keep representing!
You know that Asian guy? That Asian guy from American Pie... otherwise known as the MILF guy? Well, if you ever wanted to know who he is, you've come to the right place, because...
This week's coveted IceTea That Asian Guy trophy goes to: John Cho, the Asian American who popularised the slang, MILF!
John Cho is best known for his role in American Pie, Better Luck Tomorrow (a film that featured a full cast of Asian Americans) and the hilarious comedy, Harold and Kumar Go To White Castle. You may soon see him in a new television series called "The Singles Table" and will star as a character called Ivan. Pretty cool name for an Asian guy if you ask me.
In 2006, he was featured by People Magazine as one of the Sexiest Men Alive. See, I keep telling y'all that us Asian guys are sexy!
Hell yeah!
I found this video on youtube - it centres around the love story of John Cho's character in Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle. It shows the rare scene of an Asian guy kissing a girl on-screen.
Represent!
I was surfing the net yesterday and I happened to come across Yahoo! Answers. Somebody called "Melissa_hosang" asked the following question:
"Reason for the shape of the eyes in far eastern countries.?
Japanese and Chinese shape of eyes, reason for????"
Okay... I'm not going to go into the grammatical errors of her question. I'll simply assume she asked:
"Why do East Asians have such awesome and beautiful eyes?
What is the pragmatic purpose of having Asian eyes?"
Well boys and girls, this is where Professor IceTea dons his mortarboard (otherwise known as that square academic cap people wear when they walk their graduation ceremony) and teach the masses. Believe me, the masses need educating!
And so, on the same day, I signed up to Yahoo's service and replied to dear Melissa with this:
Our "almond-shaped" eyes are due to epicanthal folds. It's pretty much just a fold of skin that helps protect the eyes from bright sunlight, glare and dust [and the cold] (so that we can see better in harsh conditions).
ALL humans, including YOU once had epicanthal folds as babies in the womb. Some children lose them... if you're Asian you generally don't. The reason Asians don't lose the folds is because we originally came from really extreme cold and light conditions. (Have you ever been to the snow? The harsh sunlight reflecting off the snow makes you squint doesn't it? If you don't, you'd probably hurt your eyes. The epicanthal folds on Asians like me protect our eyes. Pretty useful hey? It's not a perfect system, but I can't complain.) This is why we kept the epicanthal fold.
Hence, since it's just a fold of skin, Asian eyes are NOT slanted. It's the same as anyone else's eyes as a baby, before they lose their fold. If you cut that fold of skin, you lose the "Asian" look. But why would anyone would want to do that?
In any case, I got an email today from Yahoo! telling me that my answer has been picked for "Best Answer - Chosen by Asker". SWEET! ^^
Melissa replied to me with: "Thank you so much! I am chinese myself and never knew that! Thank you! Really genuinely interesting!"
You're very welcome Melissa! I actually didn't know she was Asian until she told me, although I should have known from her name. If you want the full coverage, click here.
Yahoo! emailed me telling me to do the following: "Go ahead, do your victory dance. Celebrate a little. Brag a little."
This post is my brag.
Hey guys, this is my first post on Vox. I'm looking forward to sharing my thoughts with everyone. I'm just a random Asian Australian guy who loves everything Asian and this blog will deal with anything Asian-related that I come across.
