Once again it is time for... this week's THAT ASIAN GUY!
Today, the honour is bestowed to none other than Masi Oka. For those of you who don't know who he is, he's the main Asian guy on Heroes, aka... Hiro Nakamura! Oh yeah!
The character is awesome. He's the only one on the show who embraces his powers in a positive way. Don't get me wrong though, his friend Ando Masahashi is cool too. Interesting fact about Ando is that he's played by James Kyson Lee who is actually Korean American not Japanese.
Hiro has quickly become the fan favourite character on Heroes, appearing in every episode to date. I love his character, he makes nerds cool. Speaking of which, he was voted as "Coolest Geek" by Spike TV Guys' Choice Awards and was a Golden Globe nominee for Best Supporting Actor on a TV Series.
All the girls think he's cute, all the guys think he's funny, he's representing for the geeks and he's Asian... what's there not to like?
But... who exactly is Masi Oka? Well, here's some trivia for you:
He has an IQ over 180
He works at Industrial Light and Magic, which is George Lucas' visual special effects company
You might have seen him on Scrubs
He was once featured on the cover of Time Magazine when he was only 12
He is fluent in Japanese, English and German. And proficient in Spanish.
Wow... one helluva guy.
Whilst looking at the photo of Hayden Panettiere (above), I'm actually reminded of how I actually came to know of her. I first heard of her whilst following the production of a film called Shanghai Kiss, starring Ken Leung and directed by Chinese American David Ren. I had no idea who she was at the time or even what she looked like. It was only until Heroes came on TV did I realise who she was. In any case, don't you think Hayden Panettiere and Masi Oka look so cute together? I DO!
I'm going to end this post with a quote from Masi that really weirds me out in a good way:
"You know, I've actually been very good about not going on the Internet, I only look at things that my publicist and my friends send me, although I did see this one thing that my publicist sent me, I went online and it said, "oh my god, Hiro Nakamura, I love him so much. I want to make him my pet. I want to lock him up, talk to him, kiss him, I want to make him literally my pet." You know what, as long as they feed me, I'm all for it."
You know that Asian guy? That Asian guy from American Pie... otherwise known as the MILF guy? Well, if you ever wanted to know who he is, you've come to the right place, because...
This week's coveted IceTea That Asian Guy trophy goes to: John Cho, the Asian American who popularised the slang, MILF!
John Cho is best known for his role in American Pie, Better Luck Tomorrow (a film that featured a full cast of Asian Americans) and the hilarious comedy, Harold and Kumar Go To White Castle. You may soon see him in a new television series called "The Singles Table" and will star as a character called Ivan. Pretty cool name for an Asian guy if you ask me.
In 2006, he was featured by People Magazine as one of the Sexiest Men Alive. See, I keep telling y'all that us Asian guys are sexy!
Hell yeah!
I found this video on youtube - it centres around the love story of John Cho's character in Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle. It shows the rare scene of an Asian guy kissing a girl on-screen.
Represent!
Since it was Anzac Day last week, I thought we'd have a special TAG.
This week's coveted IceTea That Asian Guy Trophy is awarded to:
Australian born, William Edward Sing... otherwise known as Billy Sing.
The SMH has an article that gives a glimpse into the man, the legend, who won international fame for his combat record in Gallipoli.
"The year was 1916. The place, Chatham's Post on the Gallipoli front line. From across the trenches, Abdul the Terrible was staring down at The Assassin, the formidable Australian sniper responsible for picking off dozens of his Turkish comrades.
Abdul let fly with a volley of shots which missed their target. Then The Assassin carefully took aim, bringing down his nemesis with a shot that caught the Turkish sharpshooter between the eyes.
That, at least, is the legend of Billy Sing, aka The Assassin, the nuggety, dark-haired Queenslander who fought with the Australian Fifth Light Horse regiment at Gallipoli.
Sing was a renowned bushman and kangaroo hunter rumoured to be able to shoot the tails off piglets from a distance of 25 yards."
Billy Sing also happened to be of Chinese descent.
For all the Asian Australians (and even non-Asian Australians) who have fought for this country and those who are still fighting... you make us all very proud.
I know you've all been dying for it. Some people have been asking me where it's been. Well, it's back! Once again... it's time for this week's THAT ASIAN GUY trophy! *Standing ovation!*
I apologise for the lack of TAG posts, but as you all know, my computer died and TAG posts generally take a bit more research than my usual "hey this is cool Asian stuff" posts.
This week, we're talking about this Chinese Australian guy:
Most of you Sydney-siders are probably wondering who this charismatic leader is, but I know my Melbourne readers will definitely know him as JOHN SO Lord Mayor of Melbourne!
So why is this guy so awesome? Well, he's the first Melbourne Lord Mayor to be directly elected by the people. When he studied at Melbourne University as a teenager, he strongly campaigned against the White Australia policy. He is so damn popular that he won the 2006 World Mayor Award! He's got fan sites dedicated to him! How many mayors do you know have that?
This is what Wikipedia has to say about John So.
"At the closing ceremony of the 2006 Commonwealth Games, at every mention of So's name, there was a tremendous applause from the crowd, which got progressively louder with each occurrence. This 'in joke' was a good example of Australia's sometimes 'off-beat' humour, but also a subtle means of supporting So, who had been pushed out of the limelight by Premier Bracks during official celebrations throughout the Games."
You can buy shirts, stickers and mugs that exclaim "John So is my bro", likely inspired by the Music Men's rap song, "John So, He's My Bro".
So... this week's coveted IceTea That Asian Guy Trophy goes to: John So, Lord Mayor of Melbourne! Keep fighting the good fight!
And for you Sydney-siders who don't know John So (you know him now) you're forgiven, since most Sydney-folk don't even know who their own Lord Mayor is.
John So is my bro too! Is he yours?
You know that Asian guy? That Asian dude who no one really knows the name of? Whether he's that hardworking guy at the office or that character from a tv show who just doesn't get enough air time, the world is full of those Asian guys who are just not given a chance. Well, here at IceTea, they're given their fifteen minutes of fame with the coveted IceTea "That Asian" Guy Trophy! And this week's winner is...
Daniel Dae Kim! (Otherwise known as that Asian guy on Lost).
If you follow the show, you may know him as Jin. I originally rolled my eyes at his character, thinking it was going to be another one of those stereotypical domineering male characters. But as the season went on, I was pleasantly surprised that Jin turned out to be a very caring husband and a good man, though internally conflicted (which makes him so much fun to watch).
His character developed... and though it still irks me that he's the only guy on the island who doesn't speak English (which means less lines), he's definitely become one of the more interesting characters who keeps me watching the show. So let's hope this keeps up, since Jin's character has a lot of potential to become something great.
Daniel Dae Kim himself is very aware of Asian stereotypes in media and has once stated this:
"For an Asian actor, it's a minefield. You have to work through it very carefully... There aren't that many chances for Asian actors to be part of a series and move beyond the stereotype."
Here's a bit of trivia too:
1. On the show, Jin speaks Korean and no English. However, in real life, Daniel Dae Kim was raised in the US and speaks perfect English. By contrast, he has an American accent when he speaks Korean. Isn't that ironic?
2. In 2005, Daniel Dae Kim was voted one of the "Sexiest Men Alive" by People magazine. Hell yeah, Asian guys are SEXY!
3. Yun Jin Kim (who plays Jin's wife, Sun) originally auditioned for the role of Kate. She didn't get the part, but she impressed the creators enough to create the characters Sun and Jin for her.
So... this week's coveted IceTea That Asian Guy Trophy goes to: DANIEL DAE KIM, the sexy Asian guy on Lost!
Alrighty folks, do I have a treat for YOU! I've decided to make a post about some prominent or famous Asian/Asian-Australian every week to give credit where credit is due.
This week's entry is dedicated to... Chinese Australian... JEFF FATT!
WAKE UP JEFF!!!
That's right, it's Jeff from Australia's highest grossing entertainers, The Wiggles! Jeff is The Wiggle with the purple shirt... or as he is more commonly known as - the Asian guy. He plays the keyboard and accordian and was originally part of the pop/rock band, The Cockroaches (and with song titles such as "Bingo Bango" and "I want a leather jacket", who would have guessed that they would eventually become The Wiggles?). He's probably the first positive Asian face that kids all around the world will see, which is GREAT representation.
So... this week's coveted IceTea "That Asian Guy" Trophy goes to: JEFF FATT, the sleepiest Wiggle!
Great work Jeff, keep it up!
